  J. Steinkoler Trio and Quartet  Drums, Saxophone, Guitar, Bass

The J. Steinkoler Quartet is a unique ensemble whose sound combines the highest quality musicianship with creative and engaging compositions. Playing mostly original pieces written by drummer Jeremy Steinkoler and saxophonist Jim Peterson, the group navigates through a wide range of feels and textures, bringing highly evolved sensitivity and inspiration to bear on every tune. The band draws influences from eclectic sources, with nods to both jazz and rock legends, and plays a handful of creative arrangements of tunes by Abdullah Ibrahim, Pat Metheny, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Shawn Colvin, among others. Sometimes funky, sometimes swinging, sometimes moody and pensive, the Quartet delivers expressive music with a playfulness and intensity always experienced throughout the audience.

Having played together around the San Francisco Bay Area for several years, drummer Jeremy Steinkoler, saxophonist Jim Peterson, and guitarist Andre Bush have developed a highly intuitive feel for playing together. The newest member, bassist Sam Bevan, brings a refined spontaneity to his bass lines and a lyrical approach to his solos. Between the four players, there exists a mutual respect and musical understanding which imbues every performance with intensity and playfulness, qualities perceived by both the musicians and the audience.

  Mo'Fone  Drums and 2 Saxophones

Mo'Fone, an uncommon musical trio of 2 saxophones and drums, is a unique band whose contagious energy turns every performance into "A minimal but mighty romp!" (Lee Hildebrand, East Bay Express). Mo'Fone is a genre-twisting group that plays original compositions and creative arrangements of funk, New Orleans second-line, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and tunes from many more surprising sources. Mo'Fone plays with a big, rich, multi-dimensional sound that belies its compact instrumentation. Jim Peterson, weaving between bass lines and harmonies on the baritone sax (and bass clarinet), plays with a fire that ignites the band to blazing intensity. Larry De La Cruz's blistering solos on alto sax, colorful improvisations on flute and clarinet, and refined skills on percussion are memorable highlights of every show. And driving the band with sizzling polyrhythmic combustion is Jeremy Steinkoler on drums, filling out the sound of the group with both a rhythmic foundation and tonal contour. Both Jim and Larry switch between alto, baritone, and tenor saxophones, flute, clarinet, and bass clarinet. Jeremy sometimes plays kazoo. Audiences are engaged by Mo'Fone's fun, accessible and engaging musical theatrics. The musicians have so much fun on-stage that it is hard not to be swept up in the infectious energy created by the band. "Jazz's answer to the power rock trio. The band sounds fresh without losing sight of its jazz grounding. In a word, Mo'Fone delivers." (Jim Nelson, Allaboutjazz.com)
